Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, Monday, March 12th 2020

This year, the Turks and Caicos Islands Department of Sports realized the dream of having an organized Secondary School Scholastic Sports Program; a series of sporting events, training and competitions aimed at preparing our talented student athletes for the Turks and Caicos Inter High School National Track & Field Championships held March 7th – 9th at the country’s national stadium.

The Scholastic Sports Program is one that is no small feat for Turks and Caicos; our unique situation as a chain of islands has proven to be a challenge due to the cost and logistics associated with transporting coaches, athletes and officials throughout the islands which is essential for developing a true, comprehensive sporting program.

This year, many of our TCHTA members were a part of the group of corporate sponsors that rose to the occasion and partnered with the country’s Sports Department to give our student athletes the opportunity and platform they need to nurture their talents.

The Turks and Caicos Hotel & Tourism Association applauds members Graceway IGA, Caribbean Cruisin’ and FortisTCI for their valuable contributions to ensuring that this time-honoured and anticipated event was given the support it deserved.

This year, international coaches and scouts travelled to the island to see our athletes in action in hopes of finding their next college stars. TCHTA member Ports of Call Resort played an integral part by providing the accommodations for these visiting sporting professionals, while TCHTA member The Lodgings generously supported the entire scholastic sporting season by providing accommodations throughout the length of the program.

The opening ceremony of the national sporting event is always a spectacular treat for the fans and athletes alike. TCHTA members Royal West Indies and Tuscany Resort sponsor the opening ceremony each year, and this year they provided the support to make it bigger and better than ever before.

Tying it all together was the important component of ensuring that the athletes could travel from one island to the other throughout the season to participate in the trials and competitions that would prepare and qualify them for the big weekend. In the past, costly charters would be required, and the consistency of the program would suffer due to the financial strain this posed. This year, the answer to that travelling issue was TCHTA member interCaribbean Airways, who generously provided sponsorship for the athletes’ air travel throughout the scholastic year and arranged flights in accordance with the schedule set out for the sports program.
